Snack Horse review by Ian

Face it - you just can't resist some proper catchy guitar pop can you?! Good, well now we’ve got that sorted, you can be introduced to your new favourite band… step forward Actress Hands, yet another product of the thriving and diverse music scene in Brighthelmstone, (or simply Brighton to most) The single in question here, entitled Snack Horse is the bands first record label backed release and only the second release on Brighton’s new Life Is Easy Records.

For those lucky enough to have caught an Actress Hands live show then you’ll know what to expect from ‘Snack Horse’, as the song has been a fixture in their live set for a good while now. The song itself is based around a true story from Cornwall involving a horse that somehow managed to escape from the confines of its stable, and promptly trotted over the edge of a nearby cliff, only to be found dead on the rocks below. Mystery prevails though: was it an accident? Was it depressed? Or did it simply run out of grass? We’ll just never know, but as far as a witty song chorus goes this takes some beating: “its a long way down for someone of your size / you're broken down with violence to the side / the stable door wasn’t closed in time”

Things kick off in classic fashion with a chiming guitar line and keyboard hook throughout the verse, but by the time the chorus hits you it's developed into something distinctly labelled ‘Rock’ as the guitars get turned up a notch or three. The trademark vocal harmonies are formidable throughout, as is the band’s knack for a killer melody, which all in all makes for an interesting and highly catchy single that will be firmly planted in your head after a few listens.

As far as b-sides go too, the flip side of ‘Snack Horse’ is a real gem, a live version of the jangly country tinged live favourite The Doyle. Oh and for anyone who can play the guitar intro, I’ll buy you a beer.

Don’t listen to the comparisons that have been made between Actress Hands and other bands, as they’ve crafted their own unique and distinct sound, and this here song is just the start. And all this without even mentioning that Alex White from the Electric Soft Parade is also in the band… which is nice. So time to stop reading this, calmly step away from your computer, and go and buy yourself a copy of this single, you know it makes perfect sense.
