Butlin Breaks review by Ian

What are they putting in the water down on the south coast? The latest in a seemingly endless line of quality new bands to emerge from lovely Brighton town comes Restlesslist But they’re a little different from the rest don’t you know. Oh yes indeed they are.

Firstly it's important to point out that there really is no need to run scared from the use of words such as ‘instrumental’ and ‘post-rock’ in this bands case, as they create a mind bending concoction of instrumental post rock and dancefloor electronica. If you can imagine the worrying thought of what those Scots Mogwai would have sounded like if they were weaned on Aphex Twin records then you’d be part of the way there. The rest is best kept in the depths of your imagination, so listen and make your own mind up.

As for the single then, the quaintly titled Butlin Breaks, it just happens to be the bands first proper record label backed release as well as the maiden release by the label itself, Brighton’s new Life Is Easy Records. So it's a case of ‘getting to know you’ from all directions really.

The song itself is propelled along by a chugging guitar line throughout and a hypnotising horn section that arrives at unexpected intervals, as the tune and melodies twist and turn to form something lavish and bordering on the cinematic. At less than three minutes in length it’s a short and to the point debut that musically sets out perfectly what this band is all about.

It’s a compelling listen from a creative and experimental band at its best. Restlesslist exist in their very own alternative mythical world, and before very long they’ll be taking us all with them.
